How to Respond to Battery Fire in Electric Cars?

Fires in electric vehicles have brought about the question of how to respond to the batteries in these vehicles in case of fire.
Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) Kayseri Branch President Süleyman Varol said that battery-related fires in electric cars should not be intervened with water.
While comparing electric cars with other vehicle types, MMO Kayseri Branch President Varol said that not much scientific and academic studies have been done on batteries.
Varol stated that electric vehicles have the ability to accelerate at high torque with the electricity coming from the battery and said, “Electric vehicles have many advantages, but one of their biggest disadvantages is battery fires.”

Why do electric car’ batteries burn out?
Varol continued: “There are micro-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. They are used because they are more useful and long-range batteries that can store more energy. These long-range and useful batteries contain lithium-ion liquid gas. The protection around the batteries is very thin to lighten the vehicle.” “When it is hit in the event of an accident, that gas is released and causes a fire.”

What should be done during a fire in electric cars?
Pointing out that the fire could not be extinguished for a long time and lasted about 1 hour, Varol said:
“There is a lot of work in terms of the development of electric vehicles, but studies need to be carried out on battery extinguishing and preventing battery fires. Dry chemical foams and dry powders need to be used to extinguish batteries. If you intervene with water like a normal fire, you will accelerate the fire even more. Therefore, if possible, First, you need to disable the central electricity of the vehicle and then disconnect it from oxygen with dry chemical foam and dry powder. Then, water can be used to cool the battery. When you immediately intervene in the fire with water, the flame from that gas makes the fire even bigger. “
Varol also added that batteries can cause problems while charging or for no reason at 15 degrees below zero in winter and above 40 degrees in summer, and that it is important to take the necessary precautions to avoid these situations.
