Heavy Commercial Vehicles Association President Burak Hoşgören; Fleet Renewal in Heavy Commercial Vehicles Added Mobility…
When we divide the commercial vehicle market in Turkey into three as light, medium and heavy commercial, as TAİD, we represent the medium and especially heavy commercial vehicle segments. This segmentation also includes trailer vehicles. In this direction, the most important factor shaping the market is of course production.
Therefore, basic variables such as inflation, interest, tax rates and exchange rates that affect investment, cost and pricing policies are extremely important for the sector. We should also state that exports are very triggering for the sector; urban transformation and large infrastructure projects are also decisive on the sector.
The commercial vehicle market in Turkey has been undergoing a significant transformation in recent years in parallel with economic fluctuations, volatility in exchange rates, developments in the logistics and construction sectors and public policies. While the market recorded growth in certain segments compared to the previous year in 2024, there was a mobility compared to the last 10-year averages, especially in heavy commercial vehicles, thanks to fleet renewals and export-oriented demand.
In summary, we can say that the Turkish commercial vehicle market is in a transformation process under the influence of internal and external dynamics. We believe that issues such as environmental technologies, digitalization and sustainability will stand out as the main factors that will shape the market more in the coming period.
Supporting the production data, the heavy commercial vehicle market in the January-December period of 2024 decreased by 10 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The biggest decrease was in tractor vehicle sales with 25 percent. On the other hand, when looking at the 10-year average sales from a positive perspective, there is an optimistic picture, although not as much as 2023. In 2024, 15 percent more vehicles were sold compared to the 10-year average.
However, in the first four months of this year, the heavy commercial vehicle market shrank by 14 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The total number of vehicles sold during this period was 11,111. However, we can say that more vehicles were sold compared to the previous year, especially in March and April. In other words, the negative difference of the first two months turned into a positive momentum.
This creates a promising picture for the rest of the year. As an association, we report and interpret domestic sales figures. However, it is observed that the fact that exchange rates do not support exports very much makes export processes difficult. Positive developments at this point will also strengthen the export side.
If we want our sector to be even stronger in the coming years, increasing the regulations and incentives provided by the state to support exports will certainly have a positive effect on the international competitiveness of the sector. Since the course of the exchange rate is one of the main determinants that directly affects the export volume, the exchange rate level being in favor of exports can stimulate demand; however, the risk that this situation will increase production costs and weaken competitiveness in the medium term should not be ignored.
We can say that the topics we talk about the most in the sector are green agreement and sustainability. We have a committee under the roof of TAID to support the sector in this sense and we have also published a report on this subject. In particular, the use of digital tools such as switching to electric vehicles, alternative fuel vehicles, and smart fleet management, which will reduce carbon emissions, constitute our agenda. Some of our brands are aiming for zero carbon emissions in their factories by 2039. 5 electric tractors were also sold in 2024. In addition to trucks and tractors, the electrification transformation of trailers, aerodynamic design, lightweight material equipment, tire solutions, driven axle and battery technology are among the areas of work of our manufacturers.
