Attention… Winter Tire Schedule Starts Early…
The mandatory installation of winter tires will now begin on November 15th and end on April 15th. LASİD (Labour and Social Security Institution) welcomed the five-month extension as a positive step for safe traffic.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has amended the winter tire schedule. Accordingly, the regulation, which covers vehicles carrying passengers and goods on intercity highways, will begin on November 15th and end on April 15th. LASİD Secretary General Erdal Kurt expressed his positive response to the decision to extend the five-month period, saying, “This decision demonstrates the importance placed on winter tires and safe traffic. It will provide time for preparations, precautions, and inspections. We recommend that vehicle owners prepare according to this new regulation.”
Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Extends Deadline
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has extended the mandatory installation of winter tires for vehicles carrying freight and passengers on intercity highways. The Ministry amended the “Communiqué on the Procedures and Principles Regarding the Mandatory Use of Winter Tires” with a communiqué published in the Official Gazette on October 4, 2025, stating:
“Winter tires are now mandatory for vehicles used for passenger and cargo transport on intercity highways, whether registered in our country or not, for the five-month period between November 15th of each year and April 15th of the following year.”
“Extension of the Period Will Contribute to Safe Traffic”
LASİD Secretary General Erdal Kurt stated that they welcomed the change regarding the five-month winter tire application period: “As you know, in previous years, the application period began on December 1st and ended on April 1st. However, due to global warming, we have become much more frequently experiencing sudden changes in climate. Sudden snowfall, cold weather, and regional weather changes also affect traffic on highways.” The discretion to extend or advance the period, depending on the climate in the region, was left to the governor’s office. In fact, in some regions, this period was extended even further. A general decision was made to prevent these problems and make traffic safer. Five months, in particular, is an appropriate timeframe for implementation in some regions. Extending the period will also provide time for preparations, precautions, and inspections. This decision has once again demonstrated the importance placed on winter tires and safe traffic,” he said.
Caution When Choosing Winter Tires!
Erdal Kurt reminded vehicle owners not to leave the change to the last minute and outlined the key points to consider when choosing and installing winter tires: “Tires are one of the most important components of a vehicle that connects us to life. The right tire is a fundamental prerequisite for safe driving. The right tire means the right tire for your vehicle and the right season. At LASİD, we recommend selecting and installing winter tires in the size and type recommended by your vehicle manufacturer, with features appropriate to the load class and speed rating. To distinguish winter tires from summer tires, be sure to pay attention to their structural differences, as well as the sidewall markings. The chosen winter tire must be marked “Winter Tire” (a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake pattern). Most importantly, all tires on the vehicle must be winter tires, as stopping the vehicle in the shortest possible distance is more important than moving.
